What resurfacing is — and isn't

Resurfacing applies a thin cementitious layer over existing concrete to renew appearance and texture. It can turn a stained, pitted driveway or dated pool deck into a clean, uniform surface without demolition.

It is not a structural fix. If the slab is settling, badly cracked or sitting on a failed base, an overlay will crack through and you'll have paid for the surface twice.

• Cracks limited and stable rather than active and widening
• Sound surface with good bond potential after prep
• Drainage that isn't pooling water on the slab

Finish options over an overlay

Overlays can be finished smooth, textured, broom-style, sprayed with a knockdown texture, colored, or stamped with a stampable mix. Pool decks usually get a textured, cooler-colored finish; driveways usually get something more utilitarian.

Preparation does the work

Bond failure is the main way overlays go wrong, and preparation prevents it. Cleaning, profiling the existing surface and treating existing cracks all happen before any material is applied.
