When we'll tell you not to repair

If the base has failed under a large area, if the slab is cracked across most panels, or if you've already patched the same spot more than once, repair stops being good value. We'll say so rather than sell you a patch.

How we decide between repair and replacement

Most calls start with a crack, a sunken panel or a trip hazard. The right fix depends on why it happened. A shrinkage crack in an otherwise solid slab is a very different problem than a panel that has dropped because the sand underneath washed out. Repairing the surface without addressing the cause usually means the same problem comes back.

• Hairline shrinkage cracks: often cosmetic — clean and seal to keep water out
• Wider or active cracks: rout and fill with a flexible sealant rated for concrete
• Spalling or flaking surface: remove loose material and patch or resurface
• Sunken or uneven panels: level where possible, or remove and re-pour the section
• Broken edges near the street or lawn: cut back and re-pour with a proper thickened edge

Common causes of concrete damage in Jacksonville

Tree roots, especially from live oaks, lift and crack panels. Slabs poured too thin or without control joints crack in random places. New concrete will look brighter than the surrounding slab at first and blends in over time; on stamped or colored surfaces, an exact match is harder and we'll talk through options before we start.

Once the repair is done, a few habits help it last.
