Traction and surface temperature come first

A pool deck is walked on barefoot and wet. That makes texture and sealer selection more important than pattern. We use finishes with grip and sealers rated for wet, chlorinated environments.

Heat matters just as much. In Jacksonville sun, a dark deck can become unusable at midday. Lighter colors and travertine-look finishes stay meaningfully cooler.

Drainage away from the pool

Deck water should flow away from the pool, not into it. Grading, deck drains where needed and correct slope keep runoff, dirt and lawn chemicals out of the water and away from the house.

Coping and expansion joints

The joint where the deck meets the coping has to allow movement. Done right, it stays sealed and flexible. Done wrong, it cracks the deck edge or lifts the coping — one of the most common pool deck failures we're called out to fix.

Resurfacing an existing deck

If the slab is sound but the surface is dated, stained or rough, an overlay can transform it without demolition. If the deck is cracking and settling, resurfacing only postpones the real repair.

How a concrete pool deck is built

A pool deck carries foot traffic, furniture and constant water, so the layers underneath and the slope on top matter as much as the finish. The deck has to shed splash-out and rain away from the pool and away from the house, and it has to meet the coping cleanly with a proper expansion joint.

The cutaway below shows how the deck is built up from the subgrade to the finished, textured surface.

• Review pool coping, screen enclosure footings, drains and existing slope
• Excavate, grade and compact the base around the pool shell
• Set forms, reinforcement and the expansion joint at the coping
• Pour and finish with the texture you chose — broom, stamped, knockdown or other
• Cut control joints and install or tie in deck drains
• Cure, then seal with a slip-resistant additive where appropriate

Keeping it cool and non-slip underfoot

The two most common complaints about pool decks in Northeast Florida are that they get too hot and too slick. Both are mostly decided by the finish. Light colors reflect more heat than dark ones. Textured finishes such as knockdown or a lightly stamped surface give bare feet more grip than a smooth trowel finish, and a sealer with slip-resistant grit helps keep that grip once the surface is sealed.

Resurface or replace an old deck?

Plenty of older Jacksonville pool decks are structurally fine but worn, stained or dated. In that case resurfacing can refresh the look without tearing out the slab. If sections have sunk toward the pool, cracks are wide and uneven, or water pools against the house, replacing those sections is usually the better long-term answer. Pool chemicals, salt systems and constant sun are hard on any surface. A few simple habits keep a concrete deck looking good for years.

• Rinse splash-out and salt residue off regularly
• Reseal every two to three years, or when water stops beading
• Keep the expansion joint at the coping sealed so water can't get under the deck
• Clear leaves and debris from deck drains before storm season
